Cassette tape coin purse

Purse/Bag
Cassette tape coin purse

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

So, many of you know that I make cassette tape wallets.. After a few weeks of using mine, I found out that they’re not ideal for storing lose change.  It slides out of the sides when you unzip it causing you to scramble around on the floor to collect your change.  Or maybe that’s just me.  In any case, it inspired me to make a coin purse version of the cassette tape wallet.  I wanted a metal purse frame clamshell thing as a closure instead of a zipper, but I didn’t want to pay 5+ bucks for one (yeah, I’m cheap) so that was really the only thing holding me up from making one.  However, after cleaning my room the other day I found an old wallet which happened to have a coin purse attached.. perfect!  The wallet was already falling apart, so I just ripped the frame out and got crackin’.

These are my materials:

imgp3859

a cassette tape, a metal purse frame (I’m not sure of the size because I just ripped it out of that wallet) and fabric.

And here is what happens when you throw all those things together:

And that’s it!  I really like how it turned out.. I want to make more but I don’t know where else to get those purse frame things… I’ll just have to keep searching!

Try trolling resale shops for old coin purses. Lots of great ideas are just sitting in there, waiting to be discovered!

Most craft shops like Micheal’s and Hobby Lobby have the purse frames.

      Thanks!

Every time I find them in the store, they’re around 5 bucks… and I’m too cheap to spend that much money on them, haha. I think I’ll just roam around thrift stores and whatnot and buy a bunch of coin purses for a few cents each instead :)

I like this idea with this closure, but if you like the zipper one better (since you said the only reason you did it this way was because your coins fell out with the zipper), why don’t you just add gussets to the zipper one like you did on this one?

I may make these as party favours! I have a bunch of old tapes lying around and this seems like a cheap and fun gift!

Actually, coins falling out of my cassette wallet wasn’t the only reason why I wanted to make a cassette coin purse, I had been wanting to do it because I liked the look of them too. Besides, it’s a little too late to add gussets to my zipper wallet, I think I’d do more damage to it by trying to add those in because of how attached the glue is.

You should post some pictures of your coin purses if you make them!! :)

I just stumbled upon this, and thought it was a cool idea (with a different tape of course) until I noticed how it’s hinged at the bottom… you can’t really have it bulging with coins unless the sides of the “purse frame” aren’t fixed to the cassette. Am I wrong?

This coin purse holds enough change for me. I guess if you like to have a lot of change then it might not work..

I don’t understand what you mean about the sides of the frame not being fixed to the cassette.. the way I put it together, only the top of the frame is connected to the cassette. I just didn’t have the tape stretched out all the way in the pictures, it looks as though the frame is attached all the way around.

So cute! I love that you used a Barbie tape. I know I have some children tapes from when I was younger like that laying around. I think a little girl now would like this cute little change purse; bright pink, Barbie, and made of a piece of technology she wouldn’t otherwise get to experience.
