An oldie but a goldie: Mohawk Beanie!
I don’t have time to make anything today, so I figured I’d show you guys one of my older crafts that I’m pretty proud of. Since I made a beanie last night, I’ll post another beanie today! I give you, the mohawk beanie. It’s inspired by the book from knit-head, Pretty in Punk. They offer knitting patterns, but at that time, I wasn’t confident with my knitting skills, so I decided to crochet it up!

Thanks! Well, I was inspired by knit heads, but I didn’t know how to knit at the time, so I looked up a beanie crochet pattern.. crocheted that up, and then added the mohawk onto it by basically tying wool yarn down the center.

I just looked up a beanie tutorial online, and after making that I used pieces of wool yarn about 4 inches long (I think) and tied them onto the beanie in the shape of a mo hawk. After that I threw it in the washing machine and let it run for a while, checking it occasionally until the mo hawk was sticking together just right.
I might make up a tutorial for all of you who want to make one for yourselves.

If you want it to stand up and be point-like then you have to use wool for the mo hawk. It doesn’t matter for the actual beanie.. I think I used acrylic for that part. You need wool because you kind of sort of felt it.. but not really… you need to keep a close eye on it when it’s in the wash, so that it doesn’t clump together too much. And don’t put it through the dryer, you just roll it up in a towel to dry it. Hope that helps!

Do you ever find you have problems with the whole mohawk flopping to the side at all? Or does it help having short yarn to avoid that?

You’re right, I crocheted the hat in the round, but for the flaps I just kind of winged it, I made half circle things… I don’t really know how to explain it, haha. I did braid the tails, once I added the flaps, I just took left over yarn, but it to size and threaded it into the bottom of each flap, then braided them.
Once you felt the mohawk part, it doesn’t flop to the sides. At least, mine didn’t. Even for the blue one, which has a much longer mohawk, it stays up

I’m a novice knitter as well.. I kind of taught myself, and have been trying to make some gloves.. but all I can manage to make so far has been fingerless gloves, because they’re essentially just a rectangle haha.
There probably are beanie tutorials on youtube, I wouldn’t doubt it.. I don’t remember exactly where I got the pattern I used for these ones I made, but any standard pattern should work!
