An oldie but a goldie: Mohawk Beanie!

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I don’t have time to make anything today, so I figured I’d show you guys one of my older crafts that I’m pretty proud of. Since I made a beanie last night, I’ll post another beanie today! I give you, the mohawk beanie. It’s inspired by the book from knit-head, Pretty in Punk. They offer knitting patterns, but at that time, I wasn’t confident with my knitting skills, so I decided to crochet it up!

Here are the results:

Myspace angled shot.

Closeup of the ‘hawk.

Detail of the string off of the ear warmers.

Here’s a blue one!

I probably wouldn’t be able to make one soon because of school and whatnot, though. But if that doesn’t bother you, send me a message using the “contact me” link under my navigation on the top left side of my blog, and I’ll talk to you about it on there.

Thanks :)

Actually, this project involved no sewing at all :) Just a lot of crocheting.

Wow, I absolutely love this hat. Is it remotely possible to find the pattern online, you’d mentioned that it came in a knitting book, or would it just generally be easier to crochet it?

Thanks! Well, I was inspired by knit heads, but I didn’t know how to knit at the time, so I looked up a beanie crochet pattern.. crocheted that up, and then added the mohawk onto it by basically tying wool yarn down the center. :) If you end up making one, you should send me a picture!

I just looked up a beanie tutorial online, and after making that I used pieces of wool yarn about 4 inches long (I think) and tied them onto the beanie in the shape of a mo hawk. After that I threw it in the washing machine and let it run for a while, checking it occasionally until the mo hawk was sticking together just right.
I might make up a tutorial for all of you who want to make one for yourselves. :)

Thanx, that helps a lot, I think i’ll give it a go this weekend. Can you use acrylic yarn or does it have to be wool? cheers, m’leigh

If you want it to stand up and be point-like then you have to use wool for the mo hawk. It doesn’t matter for the actual beanie.. I think I used acrylic for that part. You need wool because you kind of sort of felt it.. but not really… you need to keep a close eye on it when it’s in the wash, so that it doesn’t clump together too much. And don’t put it through the dryer, you just roll it up in a towel to dry it. Hope that helps! :)

I just crochetted a normal beanie and added the mohawk to it. I’ve been thinking about making a tutorial for them.. but I’m not sure when.

Wow! This is great! I was looking at knitted versions of the mohawk beanie online, but I don’t really know how to knit very well yet! I do know how to crochet, though, and this site was one of the first to pop up on my search.

So it looks like you crocheted the hat in the round, but how did you do the earflaps? It’s a bit hard to see, but it looks like there’s some braiding involved on the tail end of the flaps…what was your technique, exactly?

I loveloveLOVE the colors you picked for the top one - that shade of green is my favorite color, and the cream and grey look fantastic with it. The green & cream detail on the strings are a really cute touch!

Do you ever find you have problems with the whole mohawk flopping to the side at all? Or does it help having short yarn to avoid that?

I StumbleUpon-ed your website some time ago, and being the kind of person who loves to wear and carry random crazy things like a little kid’s frog umbrella with pop up eyes, even when it isn’t raining, I absolutely fell in love with this mohawk beanie. I decided to make one myself and it turned out amazing! Of course I forgot where I got the idea for a long time until I StumbleUpon-ed your website again. I just wanted to thank you for giving me the idea for my coolest winter hats.
